In early 2008 T1 prices in major metro areas have stopped dropping as much as in previous years. Costs in rural areas remain high.
I look for prices to remain steady in the larger cities as the providers use the margin to lower prices for businesses in less populated cities.
Rural T1 will remain to expensive for all but the larger businesses.

T1 prices continue to drop.

We are now quoting T1 line prices for under $400 in some cases. While these prices are rare, they were unheard of just a few years ago.
As T1 prices depend on the distance from the clients location to the Providers "head end", they can vary greatly even for businesses located in the same city. Rural areas are likely to have higher T1 costs than highly populated areas.

One thing to keep in mind when shopping for a T1 service is to make sure your carrier is a Tier-1 or Tier-2 provider. Avoid Tier-3 carriers as they are resellers who solely buy access from other networks to reach the Internet. Here is a good article on the T1 Tier-1 Network structure.

One more note on T1. Some companies offer low cost services with "T1 like" Speed. The cost may be just a few hundred dollars per month. The speed they promise is the maximum you can ever expect and it is rarely achieved. These services are also far less reliable than true T1. They may be good for hardcore gamers but if your business depends on reliable, fast internet access or multiple voice lines, stick with Tier-1.

I have great news for businesses and organizations looking for networking and telecom equipment installers, dealers and technicians. Well doesn't the phone book provide the same info?

I just received the October edition (hard copy) of PHONE+ Magazine.
If you are in any way interested in keeping up to date with the state of the telecommunications Industry I highly recommend this magazine.
While it is primarily aimed at telecom / broadband agents and professionals it also has a wealth of info for businesses that use broadband communications.
I recommend the hard copy version but they also have an online version available at: phoneplusmag.com

So far in 2006 Time Warner has purchased Xpedius. Paetec bought USLEC and Megapath merged with Netifice. There are now fewer top quality T1 Providers than there were last year. What does that mean to the T1 customer? Will prices increase? Will customer service drop? I think the answer to both of those questions is NO.
There are still enough business broadband providers available that competition will keep prices low. We will not see the dramatic price drops that have happened over the past 2 years but monthly costs should still drop slightly. As for customer service, most of these companies realize that customer care is there life blood. The mergers may even improve customer service.
